Velindre Cancer Centre
The Acorn Consortium team is working with patients, staff and the local community to deliver a very progressive brief: the greenest hospital in the UK. Taff Vale site is adjacent to a SSSI and a nature reserve. This places substantial ecological constraints but more importantly it inspires all aspects of the design to promote biodiversity and underpins the ‘Keep It Wild’ mantra.
Landform and architecture are carefully articulated to minimse the presence of the building, conceal infrastructure, create a wonderful arrival experience and animate the interior with light and views of landscape.
The landscape is mostly gently undulating, biodiverse meadow swales, with a pond at the lowest point, melting into woodland. There is a series of set piece gardens, each of distinct purpose and character: Arrival Court, Kitchen Garden, Physic Garden, Retreat Garden, Orchard Meadow and Café Terrace. This Welsh landscape will embody local tradition, materials and culture.
