The Carter, City of London
This project involved the refurbishment of an outmoded office block to be more sustainable, fully accessible and commercially appealing. The building is in a highly sensitive area, being partially within St Pauls Cathedral’s height restriction zone and protected viewing corridors. Camlins was appointed to design a series of vertical greening and screening options to enhance and soften and the architectural elevations and views from neighbouring streets and buildings. The greening proposals included planted balustrades, vertical green walls, biosolar green roofs, accessible garden terraces and inaccessible planted areas. The project achieved an Urban Greening Factor of 0.22, which was a 22% increase from the existing condition. This is considered an excellent achievement, given The London Plan 2019 target for new commercial developments of 0.3, and contributed to the planning consent in November 2020.
