Shell Cove, Dawlish
Shell Cove occupies a wonderfully dramatic location, above the Devon cliffs, a short walk from the historic towns of Dawlish and Holcombe. It comprises 34 later living apartments and cottages. The architecture reflects the colours and textures of the surrounding environment, but also of traditional local buildings. Similarly, the landscape design is very much informed by the maritime situation. The generally mild conditions are also extremely windy, suggesting a particular planting palette that characterises the southwest coastline. The largest part of the garden is an expansive lawn with mature windswept pines and broad sea vistas. There is also a communal summerhouse with lounge, guest suite and decked terrace. The garden paths link with the clifftop path network and also to steps down to a private beach. At the cliff edge, there are lookout points with seats, very special places to watch the sun going down over the sea.
