Pershore Junction, Birmingham
This elegantly crafted student residence is a new landmark at the busy junction of two arterial roads running through south Birmingham. The location demanded a landscape and public realm to uplift the surrounding neighbourhood while also providing spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The public realm enhancements revitalise the existing tired green space with new seating artworks and trees, providing a welcome refuge at this busy corner, delivered under a Section 278 Agreement. The planting around the building provides a green buffer, with rain gardens to attenuate rainfall flowing from the footway. There are 18 new street trees, including fastigiate maple, elm and crab.
By contrast, within the development itself there is an inviting central courtyard that has been designed to encourage resident students to interact and enjoy spending time outside. The space includes high quality paving, lush planting, seating and a stone ping pong table in the middle.
