Mount Pleasant, Clerkenwell
Reorganisation and intensification of operations at Royal Mail’s Mount Pleasant Sorting Office in Clerkenwell presented an opportunity for large scale redevelopment. This is in fact the largest remaining central London brownfield site at 3.3ha, straddling the boundary of LB Camden and LB Islington. A development of this size and location demands residential density to meet housing targets and commercial viability. However, this has to be balanced with the conservation context, sensitivity to surrounding communities and onerous requirements for public realm, green space, play space, communal gardens, roof terraces and pedestrian connectivity through the area. So urban landscape design is the key to making this work and the glue that holds together the large and complex project. The scheme will change the way people move through and think about this part of London.
