Marina Gardens, Portishead

Marina Gardens is a later living community of 118 apartments, with communal wellbeing facilities and gardens. It is part of the wider regeneration of Portishead Quays. The architectural plan is orthogonal, reflecting the quayside setting and maritime heritage. By contrast, the green spaces are fluid and informal in character, creating a strong identity and an appealing residential setting. The main communal spaces (café, larder, games room, lounge) open out into the courtyard garden, making a space for residents to socialise. The planting here enhances the gardens in many ways. It is visually luxuriant and creates a variety of different spaces. The design offers a sensory experience for the residents. The species are selected to provide feeding and roosting opportunity for birds. Planting of the external perimeter uses distinctive signature tree species and architectural foliage, giving the site a distinctive presence within Portishead.
