City Centre Movement Strategy, Liverpool

Camlins made a critical early contribution to the renaissance of the city centre public realm as co-author of the CCMS (North) with Faber Maunsell and CCMS (East) with Atkins. These strategies shaped the city’s transportation and public realm objectives. We worked closely with the client group consisting of LCC, Merseytravel and Liverpool Vision. The CCMS was the basis for an ambitious programme of public realm improvement and bolstered Liverpool’s successful bid to become European Capital of Culture 2008.

Camlins’ role was to ensure that transportation policy promoted vibrant streets and squares that reinforce the distinct identity of the city and region. The emphasis was on the creation of ‘The Walkable City’, through wholesale remodelling of modal priorities, pedestrian prioritisation, routes, crossings, interpretation, illumination and all other aspects of public realm enhancement.
