Brentford Lock West Phase 1
The first phase of Brentford Lock West comprised three distinct buildings, each with a different architect and its own landscape challenges, resolved through close design collaboration. The design around Block J, essentially a terrace, was very much concerned with making a comfortable arrangement between the ground floor living spaces and the side street shared space. Block H surrounds a communal shared garden at podium level, bordered by private gardens with appropriate degrees of planting screens. The Commerce Road frontage provides spill out space for the ground floor active uses. Block E included a small public orchard overlooking the canal, but also required careful consideration of private terraces overlooking the public towpath. All of these spaces together create an appealing, family friendly neighbourhood with a range of interesting spaces, perhaps typical for a traditional canal age urban settlement.
