Sylvans, Sevenoaks
Sylvans is a series of five villas, each with ten later living apartments, set within the historic parkland of Wildernesse House. The architecture is contemporary, but takes a cue from nearby Arts & Crafts and Art Deco houses. Likewise, the garden spaces are influenced by classic period houses such as Coleton Fishacre, Devon, in terms of creating terraced plateaus, shaping approaches and extensive use of climbing plants.
This wooded part of the park is home to trees of national importance. An avenue of sweet chestnut was planted in 1509 to celebrate the marriage of Henry VIII to Catherine of Aragon. Relatively recently, an avenue of lime was planted in 1815 to celebrate Wellington’s victory at Waterloo. The landscape design protects the arboricultural heritage and sets the buildings advantageously within the rolling leafy parkland.
