Riverside Sunderland

Riverside Sunderland is a masterplan to revitalise the city centre, encompassing many brownfield sites and the dramatic landscape of the River Wear gorge. The 33ha area will yield four neighbourhoods with 1000 homes, community facilities, new civic buildings and 1m sq ft of commercial space. Investment in infrastructure includes new pedestrian bridges over the Wear, with the largest high level structure linking the new City Hall with the Stadium of Light.

Riverside Park will be the green heart, based on the ecology of the river corridor, building a strong active travel network, connecting the challenging topography and providing focus for the new communities. The park will include play space, community growing, SUDS terraces, open grassed slopes and woods, all managed to balance biodiversity with the practicalities of inclusive, appealing public realm. The landscape is the core of the masterplan, building on the rich industrial heritage to breathe new life into Sunderland’s heart.
