Mulberry Site, Canada Water
Camlins joined the King’s College London team to develop the brownfield Mulberry site, for student accommodation. The scheme is part of a masterplan to regenerate the area, ensuring that this development contributes architectural and public realm excellence as the new neighbourhood takes shape. The layout is centred around a wide pedestrian street, the first part of a strategic public realm thoroughfare. This is a vibrant multi purpose space, the focus for entrances, retail and external activity. Aside from this are secure collegiate courtyards, split onto ground floor and podium levels. Each has a distinct ‘landscape’ character, configured in response to circulation, range of activity required and, crucially, microclimate. The integration of affordable housing and work space provided further challenges and complexities. The client and planning authority were also much interested in the transient condition between completion of this site and anticipated development of neighbouring sites.
