Bargoed Masterplan, Rhymney Valley

The opportunity to regenerate Bargoed into a sustainable urban centre demanded a response that creates quality environments but also relates to the distinct character of topography, people and commerce. As the name illustrates, the border between Glamorgan and Gwent conjures up many precedents from historic settlements. Our starting point was an analogy for regeneration of an animal or army reforming after an attack from outside. Bargoed in the same way needs to regroup and fortify itself, following economic decline, using the indigenous components that have remained strong within the town and allowing them to expand and develop within sheltered confines. Bargoed’s urban form, emanating from the character of the Rhymney Valley, generates many public realm, transportation and development challenges. Our aim was to embrace the linear nature of the town, from end to end, and develop an uncomplicated yet rich tapestry as a New Town Map.
