Yr Ysgwrn, Gwynedd
Yr Ysgwrn was home to Hedd Wyn, the Welsh farmer and poet. Hedd Wyn won the biggest prize in Welsh literature, the National Eisteddfod Chair in 1917 but lost his life on the battlefield of Passchendaele in the First World War, shorty after having declined to return home to collect his award. As a tribute to the poet and the other fallen men of the war, a black cloth was draped over the chair as it was transported to the farmhouse where it remains today.
Camlins applied a light touch approach here in order to let the place speak for itself. The existing ‘Gardd-y-Gegin’ (Kitchen Garden) and ‘Berllan’ (Orchard) have been sensitively designed to provide a sensory experience where visitors can pause for a moment, take in the views, and contemplate the legacy of the poet.
